Volvox carteri is a spherical green alga characterized by a division of labor where approximately 2000 somatic cells with two flagella each coexist with 16 asexual reproductive cells known as gonidia. This system is highly suitable for studying how the genetic program responsible for cell-autonomous cytodifferentiation is encoded within its genome.
