Classification:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Rotifera
Class: Monogononta
Order: Ploima
Family: Trichocercidae
Description:
The lorica of this organism is a single cylindrical piece, often featuring teeth and longitudinal grooves or ridges. Its body is cylindrical, somewhat curved, and asymmetrical in shape. The toes are spine-like, varying in length and possessing several small spinules at their base. These organisms exhibit creeping or free-swimming movement and have a virgate mastax with asymmetrical trophi. The majority of species in this genus are commonly found in lake plankton, with lorica lengths ranging from 100 to 500 µm. Previously included in Diurella, this genus encompasses species with both equal and unequal toes. While Trichocerca is presently considered a heterogeneous genus, it may warrant further subdivision, although not solely based on toe length.
