Fin formula: D. 10 (3/7); P1. 12; P2. 8; A. 19-20 (2-3/17). The fish has an elongated body that is compressed, with a more convex ventral profile than dorsal. Its mouth is oblique and directed somewhat upwards. There are 12 to 22 short, closely set gill rakers on the lower arm of the first gill arch. The dorsal fin originates from above or slightly behind the anal fin. The pectoral fins are slightly larger than the head. Pelvic fins originate closer to the anal fin origin than to the pectoral fin origin. Scales are large, and the pectoral and pelvic fins have axillary scales. The lateral line is slightly curved or concave, typically with 45-48 scales.
