The fish has 12 soft rays in the dorsal fin and 8-9 in the anal fin, with 32 vertebrae. Its body is elongated, arched above, flat below, somewhat depressed towards the front, and compressed towards the rear. The head is flattened, with a small mouth and a long lower jaw that extends much further than the width of the mouth. The gill membranes are broadly attached to the isthmus. Eyes are positioned dorsolaterally, and the space between them is flat. The dorsal fin is closer to the tip of the snout than to the base of the tail, typically with 8 (occasionally 9) branched rays and an oblique, concave rear edge. Paired fins are horizontally inserted. The pectoral fin has 4-5 unbranched and 9-12 branched rays, while the anal fin is short and somewhat sickle-shaped.
