Description:
This wetland bird is easily recognizable due to its long, black spoon-shaped bill tipped in yellow. It is a large bird with predominantly white feathers and long black legs. During the breeding season in spring and summer, adults develop a yellow band around the breast and a tuft of feathers on the back of the neck. These features are not present outside of the breeding season. Juvenile birds have wings with black tips, while their legs and bills are a muted pink-grey color.
Habitat & Distribution in Bangladesh:
The preferred breeding habitats for this bird include areas with open water, both fresh and brackish, and dense reed beds. These habitats typically include coastal marshes, river valleys, and some islands. Outside of the breeding season, they can also be found in estuaries and sea inlets.
