Pinnularia acrosphaeria has elongated valves that widen at the center and taper to broadly rounded, slightly capitate ends. The raphe is positioned along the side, and its outer slit is straight. The valve surface exhibits a speckled or mottled texture.

Mostly found in organotrophic freshwater waterbodies.
