The body is elongated, with a small head relative to its length. The large eyes occupy most of the head. The upper jaw is slightly longer than the lower, resulting in a marginally downward mouth opening. The pectoral fin is as long as the head excluding the tip, while the dorsal fin is longer than the head. The lateral line is incomplete, comprising 36 scales. The body is transparent with brownish-silver vertical stripes on both sides. There is a small black spot at the front of the dorsal fin base and a mole-like spot on the side of the caudal fin.
