Description:
This massive kingfisher is characterized by its large scarlet bill. It has an olive-brown head, dark green-blue upperparts, and buff-colored underparts. The wings and tail are a brighter blue, with the rump showing an even paler blue, which is noticeable in flight. Juveniles have dusky edges on the feathers of their breast and hindneck. During the breeding season, it is vocal, emitting a loud, far-reaching “peu-peu-pow” whistle, and its regular contact call is a repeated, loud laughing “ka-ka-ka” 6-10 times.

Found along rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds.
