Classification:
Kingdom: Plantae
Phylum: Chlorophyta
Class: Chlorophyceae
Order: Chlamydomonadales
Family: Volvocaceae
Description:
Pandorina morum is a green algae species forming spherical colonies (coenobia) composed of 16 to 32 small, spherical cells with smooth surfaces. These cells are typically 10 to 20 micrometers in diameter and have firm cell walls for structural support. Each cell contains chloroplasts essential for photosynthesis, positioned near the cell periphery, with a centrally located nucleus. Reproduction occurs through asexual cell division within the colony, enabling growth. Commonly found in freshwater environments such as ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams, Pandorina morum contributes to the phytoplankton community’s diversity and productivity.
