Classification:
Kingdom: Plantae
Phylum: Chlorophyta
Class: Trebouxiophyceae
Order: Chlorellales
Family: Oocystaceae
Description:
These organisms are typically planktonic but can exist either as colonies composed of 2-8 cells, which are enveloped by the cell wall of the mother cell, or as individual unicellular entities. Their cell bodies have a broad ellipsoidal shape with both ends being slightly pointed and covered by a thick cell wall. Within each cell, there are 1-3 parietal, plate-like chloroplasts, each housing a single pyrenoid. The cell bodies themselves are broad and ellipsoidal, measuring approximately 15-18 μm in length and 8-10 μm in width. These are colonial chlorophytes, often found in ovoid or lemon-shaped cells. In their colonial form, they group together as 2, 4, or 8 cells, with each cell having an enlarged and inflated cell wall. Their chloroplasts are parietal in position and can vary in shape.
