The fish has a somewhat stout body that is rather elongate and cylindrical to slightly compressed, with a short and relatively deep caudal peduncle. Its scales are relatively large, numbering between 39-46 along the lateral line. The head is relatively short, with moderate-sized eyes and a slightly rounded snout. The mouth is relatively small to moderate in size, terminal in position, and lacks barbels. Gill rakers are short and stout. The short dorsal fin originates slightly anterior to the pelvic fin origin. The caudal fin is large and forked. A distinguishing feature is the pharyngeal apparatus, where throat teeth typically form a single row of 4-5 large molariform teeth on each of the two arches.
