Body stout, cylindrical in cross-section, slightly compressed; head broad and flattened. Well developed adipose eyelid. Labial teeth of upper jaw small, straight, dense, usually in several rows; mouth cleft ending below posterior nostril. Two dorsal fins. Scales ctenoid.
