The cells are diminutive and containing gas-filled vesicles. They do not have individual sheaths or mucilaginous envelopes. These organisms exist in a colonial state, with colonies enveloped in a fine, colorless mucus. The colonial structures are gelatinous and float freely.

These organisms are found in freshwater habitats around the world.
