Description:
The cells are either ovoid or spherical and are organized in rows. They create flat, rectangular colonies that are connected by a mucilaginous matrix. Each cell is surrounded by an individual mucilage sheath embedded in a colonial envelope. These cells are characterized by numerous gas vacuoles, giving them a brownish to purplish appearance. Reproduction is exclusively through fission, with cell division occurring in two directions only.
