Macrobrachium species can be distinguished by certain characteristics, such as a carapace with a projecting rostrum, mandibles featuring a molar process equipped with a triarticular palp, the first pair of pereiopods being chelate and slender, extending to the length of the carapace, and the second pair being chelate and often surpassing the entire body length in males. The remaining three pairs of pereiopods are simple. The telson, triangular in shape, terminates in a single tip and displays hepatic and antennal spines, along with two pairs of spines on the dorsal surface. Identifying species can be challenging, particularly due to notable differences between male and female specimens. The most reliable criteria for differentiation lie in examining the shape of the rostrum and the chelae of the second pair of pereiopods in males.
