Fully grown individuals of this species typically measure between 6 and 13 millimeters (0.24–0.51 inches) in length, with females slightly larger than males. They may appear ivory-yellow or translucent, but possess pigmented red chromatophores in the carapace and telson. The intensity of this coloration, believed to be linked to the species’ activity during twilight hours, varies depending on the expansion or contraction of the chromatophores in response to light and temperature changes; individuals in shaded regions tend to exhibit a deeper red hue. Juvenile specimens are generally more translucent compared to adults. When preserved, individuals lose their coloration and become opaque.
