Order: Calanoida
Family: Diaptomidae
Description:
The female of this species has a moderately long body with a constriction on the head. The abdomen is nearly two and a half times shorter than the thorax, with a pair of small spines on the margin of the last thoracic segment. The urosome is three-segmented, with the genital segment being the largest and provided with a stout spine on either side. The antennule is long, reaching beyond the furcal rami, and the caudal rami are symmetrical with six caudal setae. The fifth leg is somewhat symmetrical in form, with the right leg having additional tooth-like processes on the second exopod. In the male, the body is moderately slender with a rounded tip at the anterior end. The last thoracic segment extends into asymmetrical wings, with the right wing more produced than the left. The urosome is five-segmented, and the caudal rami are symmetrical with six setae. The right antennule is prehensile and modified for grasping, and the fifth right leg is longer than the left. The lengths are about 0.50-1.05 mm for males and 0.60-1.50 mm for females (Roy, 1999; Khan, 2003). The life cycle primarily consists of six different naupliar and five copepodid stages. Newly hatched nauplius larvae lack external segmentations, but remarkable changes occur at the molt of the copepodid, closely related to the adult stage.
