A large, majestic bird with long legs and a long neck. Both sexes are similar, featuring a distinctive shaggy ‘bustle’ of drooping feathers on the rear and a pointed bill. The plumage is primarily blue-grey, with a black and white pattern on the head and neck, and a notable smudge of red on the hindcrown. In flight, the bird has large, long wings with fingered ends, and it extends its neck and legs. Juveniles are paler with a buffish-brown coloration on the head and neck, lacking the adult’s distinctive markings.
