Description:
The Pin-tailed Snipe is a small member of the Gallinago family. It measures 25–27 cm in length, has a wingspan of 44–47 cm, and weighs around 115 g. This species is characterized by a long straight bill, relatively short broad wings that are somewhat blunt, a very short tail, and short legs. In flight, it is recognized by its small size, small head, squat body, somewhat rounded outer wings, short bill, and feet that extend beyond the tip of the tail. Both sexes look the same, and there is no seasonal variation in their plumage.
Habitat & Distribution in Bangladesh:
During the non-breeding period, the Pin-tailed Snipe is most frequently found in or around the edges of shallow freshwater swamps, ponds, and lakes with emergent vegetation ranging from sparse to dense grass or sedge. The species also inhabits drier, more open wetlands, such as claypans in the more arid regions of its range. It is commonly seen at sewage ponds but is not typically found in saline or intertidal wetlands.
