Classification:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Rotifera
Class: Eurotatoria
Order: Flosculariaceae
Family: Trochosphaeridae
Description:
This organism possesses a cylindrical body with three distinct sections: the head, trunk (body), and foot, lacking clear segmentation. Its body is covered by a cuticle secreted by the syncytial hypodermis. The head region features a corona equipped with cilia, serving as the entrance to the buccal cavity. Within the trunk, internal structures include a mastax, esophagus, stomach, intestine, anus, and vitellarium, responsible for yolk substance production for egg development. Females typically have a single ovary and carry the egg sac near their posterior end. Their mastax lacks branching structures, and the presence of a lorica may vary. Males are generally small and degenerate. The corona is not particularly large, and the body takes on a sac-like shape with a straight anterior end and lacking a lorica. A circumapical band formed by cilia near the head and two red eye spots may be present. Setae on the body can be smooth or have tiny bristles. The mastax’s unci, or jaw structures, contain numerous teeth. Additionally, there are two appendages near the head aiding in movement. Typically, one spine is located terminally or subterminally towards the anterior end, while posterior setae are positioned ventrally away from the organism’s terminal point.
