Description:
The cells possess heterokont flagellation, one or two chloroplasts, one or more contractile vacuoles, and a stigma. The protoplast is enclosed within a cylindrical to funnel-shaped lorica composed of interwoven cellulose microfibrils. Species identification is primarily based on the morphology of the lorica and colony structure.
