Classification:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Branchiopoda
Order: Ctenopoda
Family: Sididae
Description:
The female organism is characterized by an oblong carapace that narrows towards the posterior end. The posterodorsal corner of the valves almost forms a right angle, while the posteroventral corner is nearly rounded and adorned with 6-8 denticles followed by delicate cilia. A duplicature joins the ventral shell margin at a nearly right angle. The body is transparent, and the head is large, lacking a rostrum, and almost rounded anteriorly. It features relatively large eyes with numerous crystalline lenses, located in the frontal portion of the head near the ventral margin. The reflexed antennae do not extend to the posterior margin of the valves. The postabdomen is narrow and adorned with fine setules, while the claw bears three basal spines, decreasing in size proximally. In terms of its reproductive cycle, the parthenogenetic female progresses through a series of adult instars and produces batches of eggs. Unlike some species, these eggs are not released into the exterior environment but instead are incubated in the brood pouch of the mother. Embryonic development occurs within the brood pouch, and the young are eventually released as juveniles.
