Description:
Non-breeding adults have a relatively short, blackish bill, a mask, and dark streaks on the hindcrown and nape. Their crown is white with dark streaks at the back, and they have dark reddish legs and feet. They also have a short, shallowly forked tail and a uniform gray upper side. Breeding adults have a dark red bill, legs, and feet, along with a black forehead extending to the nape of the neck. Juveniles look like non-breeding adults but have buff-brown markings on the scapulars and back.

Breeds on vegetated inland lakes, marshes and rivers, mainly in lowlands
