Description:
The fish has an elongated body that is cylindrical anteriorly and compressed posteriorly. Its head is depressed and pointed, with a slightly concave dorsal profile. The lower jaw is longer and prominent, and both jaws are lined with villiform teeth arranged in many rows. The mouth opens above the level of the eye. Both the head and snout are scaled, with auxiliary scales present on most scales of the head and body. The body coloration is typically brownish or blackish-green. There is a scarlet spot at the lower base of the pectoral fin. The head and body also feature dark spots, with those on the cheek radiating from the eye.

Usually found in rivers, creeks and brackish water, particularly where there is vegetation
