Description:
This medium-sized heron is found in forested and vegetated wetlands, ponds, and lakes. All age groups and plumages feature dark upperparts with distinctive orange, yellow, and reddish striping on the neck and breast. Females and immatures generally appear browner with less contrast compared to males.
