Description:
The breeding male Aythya nyroca is a rich, dark chestnut color on the head, breast, and flanks, contrasted by pure white undertail coverts. In flight, the white belly and underwing patch are visible. Females are duller and browner overall compared to males, with the male having a yellow eye and the female a dark eye.
