Description:
Distinguished by petite cells containing gas-filled vesicles, these organisms typically organize into colonies. Beginning in a spherical form, these colonies lose coherence and transform into perforated or irregular shapes over time. The colonies are held together by a dense mucilage, consisting of complex polysaccharide compounds. The protoplast within the cells has a light blue-green coloration, which may appear dark or brown.
