A large grayish-brown duck distinguished by its yellow-tipped black bill and a red spot at the base of the bill (which may be absent in some subspecies). In flight, you can see a green panel on the wing bordered by white. This duck is commonly seen in small groups either dabbling or tipping up in shallow water, or walking on marshy edges of freshwater lakes and cultivated fields. It generally does not associate with other species. It resembles the Eastern Spot-billed Duck, but can be identified by its green wing panel, the absence of a prominent dark “moustache,” and its overall warmer tan coloration.
