Anabaena spiroides is a filamentous cyanobacterium with cylindrical cells that form spiral trichomes. It includes specialized heterocysts for nitrogen fixation and larger akinetes for survival in unfavorable conditions. Typically blue-green in color, this species is found in freshwater environments and contributes to primary production and nutrient cycling through photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation.
