Blyth’s Kingfisher (Alcedo hercules) is the largest kingfisher within the genus Alcedo. Named after Edward Blyth, it has also been known as Alcedo grandis or the Great Blue Kingfisher. Measuring between 22 and 23 cm in length, this kingfisher features deep rufous underparts with a blackish-blue patch on the chest and striking cobalt blue or azure upperparts with a hint of purple. Its wings are dark blackish-green with blue speckles and tips on some feathers. Males have a completely black bill, while females have a dark red lower mandible. Blyth’s Kingfisher can be distinguished from the Blue-eared Kingfisher (Alcedo meninting) and the Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) by its larger size, robust black bill, and darker lores.
