This small, exotic-looking duck is typically found at lakes and parks, often near trees. The male is very ornate, with large orangey “sail fins” on its back, streaked orangey cheeks, and a small red bill with a whitish tip. The female has narrow white spectacles on a shaggy gray head, bold pale dappled spots along the flanks, and a pale bill tip. These ducks are mainly seen in pairs or alone but will gather in larger flocks during the winter and readily perch in trees over water.
