This fairly large duck has an extensive range across the Northern Hemisphere. Males are primarily gray with a black rear end and a puffy head, and they have a small white wing patch visible in flight. Females resemble Mallards but can be distinguished by their thinner bill, plainer face, an orange line along the edge of the bill, and the same white wing patch in flight. They are commonly seen in pairs or small flocks in shallow wetlands, ponds, or bays, occasionally mixing with other duck species.
