Description:
Twisting and turning on long, angular wings, this bird, a relative of sandpipers and plovers, gives a swallow-like impression in flight. Adults are brown overall with an elegant black necklace and a pale yellow throat. In flight, look for dark flight feathers, chestnut underwing coverts, a bright white trailing edge to the wings, and a flashing white rump. Juveniles are mottled gray-brown above and do not have the adult’s distinctive necklace. The flight call is a harsh “tarrack.”
