Description:
The Goliath Heron has a distinctive appearance: its head is adorned with a chestnut crest that is elongated and bushy. It boasts a very large, thick bill that is black on top and pale horn-colored below. Its eyes have yellow irises rimmed with red, and the area around the eyes (lores) is green-yellow. The sides of its face and neck, as well as the back of its neck, are a pale chestnut color. Its chin and throat are white, with black streaks extending down the neck to the upper breast. The back and upper wings are slate grey, with a chestnut patch visible at the wing bend when closed. The lanceolate plumes on its back are also slate grey. White lanceolate plumes adorn the upper breast, hanging over the deep rufous chestnut color of the breast and other underparts. The under wings are pale chestnut in color. Its relatively long legs and feet are black.
Habitat & Distribution in Bangladesh:
The Goliath Heron is predominantly found in aquatic environments, both coastal and inland, and tends to stay close to water sources. Its preferred habitats include the shallow edges of large lakes, lagoons, and extensive river systems. It typically hunts in deeper water and around floating vegetation away from the shore. It can also be found in various shallow water bodies such as rivers, lakes (both saltwater and freshwater), marshes, swamps, tidal estuaries, reefs, and occasionally mangrove creeks and water holes.
