Body is elongated and the eyes are set apart by a small interorbital space. The snout is bluntly pointed. Scales are relatively large, being ctenoid on the eyed side of the body and cycloid on the blind side. There are typically 10 caudal fin rays. In terms of coloration, the eyed side is reddish-brown, occasionally displaying irregular brown-black patches and there is a sizable black blotch on the gill cover.
