Description:
It has laterally compressed body and round abdomen before ventral fin. Head is large and length of head is larger than body height. It has terminal mouth. Lower jaw extends slightly over upper jaw. Scales are small. There are 96-110 scales in lateral line; lateral line extends to caudal peduncle. Dorsal fin ray: 3,7; pectoral fin ray: 1,17; ventral fin ray: 1,8; anal fin ray: 3, 12-13; body colour: black in dorsal and upper lateral portion, silvery white in abdomen, irregular black spots on the lateral side of body and greyish colour in fins.
Habitat & Distribution in Bangladesh:
In its natural environment, it occurs in rivers with marked water-level fluctuations, overwinters in middle and lower stretches.

Comments:
It is an exotic fish in Bangladesh. It hasbeen brought from Nepal in 1981 for the purpose of aquaculture.
