Adults of these insects are large and broadly oval, measuring between ⅞″ to 19⁄16″ (22 to 40 mm) in length. They typically have a black or dark brown coloration, occasionally with a greenish tinge. The body is widest around the middle. Most species exhibit yellow borders on the sides of the thoracic shield (pronotum) and along the sides of the hardened wing covers (elytra). In females of many species, the elytra feature 10 parallel grooves, while in males of all species, the elytra are smooth. The legs are either yellow or brownish in color. The hind leg’s fourth segment (tibia) is notably longer than it is broad, and it terminates with a long, slender spur at the tip.
