Description:
The otters have dark brown fur on their backs and lighter fur on their bellies, occasionally with gray, white, or cream-colored markings on their faces and throats.Their bodies are elongated, situated on short legs, with the front legs shorter than the hind legs. Their feet are slender and webbed, and they possess a small head and a flattened tail. The claws are small and blunt that do not extend beyond the foot pads.
Habitat & Distribution in Bangladesh:
It resides in various natural habitats such as ponds, lakes, rivers, coastal areas, estuaries and mangroves. It is also commonly found near human settlements, particularly in rice fields. In Bangladesh, it can be found in Khagrachari, the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the Sundarbans.
Environment:
Freshwater, brackish.
Comments:
Otters are semi-aquatic mammals because they are highly adapted for swimming with streamlined bodies and webbed feet. They also feed on fish and invertebrates.
